What does' needle count 'mean for knitted sweaters?
2026-10-17 00:11:30

When buying knitted sweaters, you must have seen parameters such as "7 stitches", "12 stitches", and "16 stitches" written in the product details. Many consumers only focus on style and color, but overlook this key indicator that directly affects the wearing experience. In fact, the "number of needles" in knitted sweaters refers to the gauge of the loom, which is the number of needles arranged per inch of length. The higher the number of needles, the finer the needles, and the thinner and more delicate the sweater woven; On the contrary, the lower the number of needles, the thicker the needles, and the thicker and fluffier the sweater.

In horizontal knitting, the "number of needles" usually corresponds to the gauge. For example, a 7-needle machine means there are 7 needles per inch; There are 12 needles in a 12 needle machine. The machine number determines the maximum fineness of available yarn - the denser the needle, the finer the yarn that can be used, and the more compact the fabric structure. This is like the strokes of a paintbrush: the thick needle is like an oil painting brush, leaving a distinct texture; Fine needles are like wolf hair and small Kai, outlining delicate patterns.

The choice of needle count is essentially a balance between thickness, breathability, drape, and appearance style. When developing knitted sweaters for each season, Tiecheng matches the optimal stitch length based on the target season, yarn composition, and design effect, rather than blindly pursuing any one.
